Youth to Experience the Peel Firsthand

July 6, 2015

WHITEHORSE, YUKON ¬- CPAWS Yukon is excited to announce the launch of its Youth Leadership canoe trip on the Wind River. The 400-kilometre journey will take five First Nation youth from Peel communities through some of the most pristine, remote wilderness in the world, learning to navigate whitewater, live in the wilds, and work as a team. During this three-week leadership training opportunity participants will be paddling, hiking and engaging creatively with the landscape, offering the next generation of Peel champions first-hand experience in this wild region.
“I know others who can no longer hunt their lands, splintered in thousands of roads and bearing sick animals. These are maladies my Grandfather never saw, that our grandchildren should never see, and we should know better now. The CPAWS Peel canoe trip is a genuine chance at sharing my concern and creating awareness to this very serious issue that has been greatly mishandled. We are caretakers not owners of this Earth. It is our Mother not an infinite source of raw materials.” -Dana Tizya-Tramm, Old Crow participant
” I’d like my kids and grandkids to experience this clean water we have now. I can tell them my experiences so they can fight to protect the Peel also” – Prairie Dawn Edwards, Aklavik Participant
“We are very excited to be able to offer this trip to youth to travel in the Peel Watershed” says Gill Cracknell, Executive Director of CPAWS Yukon. “Our goal is to inspire these young people to be the next generation of decision makers for not only for this water, but for all water in the future.”
The Canoe Trip begins on July 6 in Mayo and will finish in Fort McPherson on July 24.
